Medicare Part D is an insurance plan that helps pay for your prescription medication.

Original Medicare does not provide this coverage. You’ll have to purchase a standalone plan or receive it through a Medicare Advantage Plan.

 

Medicare drug coverage is optional and is offered to everyone with Medicare. However, if you decide not to get it when you’re first eligible, and you don’t have other creditable prescription drug coverage (like drug coverage from an employer or union) or you don't get Extra Help, you will likely pay a late enrollment penalty when you do take out coverage.
